FAQ Schema / Structured FAQ

Definition

FAQ schema is structured data markup (schema.org FAQPage) that enables displaying questions and answers directly in Google results.

FAQ schema (schema.org/FAQPage) is a type of structured data markup that tells Google a page contains a list of questions and answers. When properly implemented, it can generate rich results in SERPs, displaying questions with expandable answers directly below the site link. This significantly increases visibility and CTR (up to +30% according to studies). Implementation can be done in JSON-LD (recommended by Google), Microdata, or RDFa. Each Q&A pair uses the Question type with an acceptedAnswer of type Answer. Google rules require: content must be visible on the page (no hidden content), answers must be complete and useful, no advertising content in answers, and markup must match the visible text exactly. Since 2023, Google has reduced FAQ rich result display to authority and government sites, but the markup remains useful for semantic understanding.

Key Points

  • schema.org/FAQPage markup in JSON-LD for questions and answers
  • Can generate expandable rich results in SERPs
  • Since 2023, display reduced to authority sites but remains semantically useful

Practical Examples

JSON-LD implementation

A site adds FAQPage markup in JSON-LD with 5 Q&As about link building. Google displays 2 questions as rich results, increasing SERP space and CTR by 25%.

FAQ and AI Overviews

Structured FAQs provide clear Q&A pairs that Google's AI Overviews can easily cite, increasing the chances of appearing in generative answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Since August 2023, Google has restricted FAQ rich results display to government and recognized health sites. However, the markup remains recommended as it helps Google understand content and may appear in other contexts (AI Overviews, Google Discover).

There is no technical limit, but 3-10 relevant and useful questions are recommended. Google will select the most relevant for display. Prioritize answer quality over question quantity.
